Porsche Gets The Green Light For Hybrid Sports Car

Today the Porsche supervisory board gave the go-ahead for production for a new hybrid supercar that can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in approximately 3.2 seconds.

The 918 Spyder will carry a price tag of nearly $650,000 and will become a shining example in the company’s effort to produce “green” sports cars. The car is one of three in a series hybrid models that Porsche showcased at the Geneva Motor Show last March. In April the company announced that they require 1,000 sales commitments to warrant development of the vehicle.

The car will seat two and combine a 500 horsepower V-8 engine and a hybrid electric drive system. It is expected to travel about 14 miles on electric power.

Development of the hybrid sports car will take place at a research facility near Stuttgart, Germany and production occur at the main plant in Zuffenhausen.

Porsche AG president Michael Macht said, “Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance, featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts.”
